This month at Excellence is all about innovation and no product could be considered innovative without an innovative foundation in the business itself. Due to the ever changing current economy and social media allowing potential customers to have access to millions of products instantly it is important to find something that will distinguish your company and set you apart from others. It is equally important to understand innovation should not exist only in times of need but be a consistent practice to put your business at the forefront of the next big thing. Consumers want a company that intrigues them and is doing something before anyone else does it.

What kinds of innovations are consumers and potential customers looking for? The respondents to KPMG’s 2013 Food and Beverage Industry Outlook survey indicate the most significant impact is being made by engaging consumers through digital channels and social media. According to survey respondents, product innovations (38%) and adding customers (35%) will be key drivers of revenue growth over the next one-to-three years. And while pursuing alternative sales channels and distribution strategies are expected to give revenue a boost, “healthier” products and those addressing dietary needs will also bolster revenue growth.

The best part about innovation is that you don’t necessarily have to spend a lot of money to have an innovative advantage. Creative thinking, determining what sets you apart from your competition, and focusing on your strengths will all be great starting points to lead you in the right direction.
